Why this matters
Most metro-relocation searches focus on the central county — Cook for Chicago, Harris for Houston, Maricopa for Phoenix. But the suburb you actually live in often has a meaningfully different tax rate, and most buyers don't compare them carefully before they buy. A 0.5-1.0% rate gap on a $400k home is $2,000-4,000 per year forever.
The pattern most often: the central urban county has higher rates (older infrastructure, more services, higher voter-approved bond debt). Suburban counties typically have lower rates. Newer master-planned suburbs sometimes break the pattern with high MUD (Texas), Mello-Roos (California), or special-assessment-district taxes that don't show up in the headline rate.
